# Flexible for Flox - Nix Environments, Visually

An unofficial JetBrains plugin for Flox: manage packages, services, generations and FloxHub sync in a tool window, with a one-click installer and WSL2.

So this is an unofficial one: Flexible for Flox.
I like Flox. It gives you the whole Nix package universe without making you learn Nix first, which is exactly the trade I wanted. What it did not have was a proper IDE integration. So… you know how this goes by now.
The plugin gives you a tool window with tabs for Packages, Services, Generations and Environment. Search the catalog inline (180,000+ packages), install, upgrade, remove. Start and stop the services in your manifest and stream their logs in an embedded console.
Generation history is the part I use most. Browse it, roll back, switch to any specific one, or diff two manifests in the JetBrains diff viewer. When something breaks and you have no idea which generation did it, that view answers the question in about ten seconds.
There’s FloxHub login, push and pull with conflict resolution, build and publish for artifacts, and containerize to an OCI tarball. The built-in terminal auto-activates the environment so you stop forgetting to.
And there’s a one-click installer that covers macOS via Homebrew, Debian/Ubuntu via apt, and Fedora/RHEL via dnf. On Windows it detects WSL2, installs Flox inside your default distro, then transparently wraps every command as wsl -- flox .... No PATH fiddling. That bit took embarrassingly long to get right.
To be clear: this is unofficial. We built it because we use Flox and thought it deserved better. If you use it too, tell us what’s missing - that’s genuinely how this gets good.
Thanks to @sschuberth for catching the crash we fixed in 2026.1.6.
