17 ENTRIES • TAGS • OPERATIONAL

2026.10.08 → [FLEXIBLE COBOL - A REAL COBOL IDE IN JETBRAINS](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-cobol-released/)

![Flexible COBOL plugin logo](/images/flexible-cobol.svg)

So this is an exciting one: [Flexible COBOL](https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/34037-flexible-cobol).

COBOL never went away. It just got quiet. A lot of it still runs, and developing or modernizing it without proper IDE support is hard - especially across mixed IBM Enterprise COBOL and GnuCOBOL codebases with deep copybook trees.

2026.09.21 → [WHY A LANGUAGE PLUGIN NEEDS A GRAMMAR, NOT A REGEX](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/bnf-grammar-jflex-language-plugin/)

A regex can highlight a language for about as long as nobody nests anything. The moment a string contains a comment marker, or a comment contains something that looks like a string, or a block comment nests inside another block comment the way Julia’s #= ... =# is allowed to, the pattern either lights up the wrong span or gives up entirely. Everyone’s first instinct for a language plugin is a regex, because a regex is the honest, cheap thing to reach for, and it is also the thing that guarantees you will rewrite the highlighter twice.

2026.09.14 → [JETBRAINS PUT INTELLIJ'S JAVA BRAIN IN VS CODE](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/intellij-java-kotlin-lsp-vscode/)

JetBrains sells IDEs. In August 2026 it also started giving away, in preview, the exact Java and Kotlin intelligence that its IDEs have always used to justify the licence. I build JetBrains plugins for a living, so I read that announcement more carefully than most people will. What actually went out “IntelliJ IDEA Goes LSP” is a preview extension that brings IntelliJ’s Java and Kotlin code intelligence into VS Code and its forks, Cursor and Antigravity included, over the Language Server Protocol.

2026.08.13 → [FLEXIBLE FOR OPENSCAD - THE DESIGNER UPDATE](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-openscad-designer-update/)

![Visual gizmo editing in Flexible for OpenSCAD](/images/flexible-openscad-gizmos.png)

A short follow-up to [the OpenSCAD plugin post](/posts/flexible-openscad-released/) - quite a lot has landed since May.

2026.08.11 → [FLEXIBLE HASKELL - AND A BIT OF BLUESPEC](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-haskell-released/)

![Flexible Haskell](/images/flexible-haskell.svg)

A quick one: [Flexible Haskell](https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/30630-flexible-haskell).

Haskell tooling in JetBrains IDEs has been in a strange place for years. There are a few plugins around, and most of them are either abandoned or stuck. So we wrote one.

2026.08.10 → [FLEXIBLE ELIXIR - PHOENIX WITHOUT THE SETUP](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-elixir-released/)

![Flexible Elixir](/images/flexible-elixir.svg)

Next up: [Flexible Elixir](https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/30043-flexible-elixir).

We built this one for our own production Elixir projects, which is usually the right reason to build a thing.

2026.08.07 → [FLEXIBLE FOR FLOX - NIX ENVIRONMENTS, VISUALLY](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-flox-released/)

![Flexible for Flox](/images/flexible-flox.svg)

So this is an unofficial one: [Flexible for Flox](https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/31388-flexible-for-flox).

I like Flox. It gives you the whole Nix package universe without making you learn Nix first, which is exactly the trade I wanted. What it did not have was a proper IDE integration. So… you know how this goes by now.

2026.08.06 → [FLEXIBLE FOR ARDUINO - ESP32 IN JETBRAINS](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-arduino-released/)

![Flexible for Arduino](/images/flexible-arduino.svg)

Okay, so - [Flexible for Arduino](https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/31027-flexible-for-arduino).

I have a drawer full of ESP32 boards. You know how it goes. And the thing that always got me was the serial monitor: the board resets, spits out a Guru Meditation panic, resets again, and you sit there squinting at a wall of scrolling output trying to work out what died.

2026.08.05 → [FLEXIBLE ABAP - SAP DEVELOPMENT IN JETBRAINS](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-abap-released/)

![Flexible ABAP](/images/flexible-abap.svg)

This one took a while: [Flexible ABAP](https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/30488-flexible-abap).

ABAP is one of those languages where you are basically stuck with whatever tooling SAP hands you. If you’ve spent time in Eclipse with ADT, you know exactly what I mean.

2026.08.04 → [AIVORY GENIE - YOUR OWN AGENT, IN JETBRAINS](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/aivory-genie-released/)

![AIVory Genie](/images/aivory-genie.svg)

Alright, another one: [AIVory Genie](https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/32420-aivory-genie) is out.

Everyone and their dog is shipping an AI agent plugin right now (woof). So why another one? Because I kept hitting the same two annoyances and got tired of it.

2026.05.30 → [FLEXIBLE FOR OPENSCAD](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-openscad-released/)

![Flexible for OpenSCAD Demo](/images/flexible-openscad-demo.gif)

I got a 3D printer and started to dabble with modelling. I use AI agents for a lot of it, having them render the outcome so that they can see what they did. But I figured that often makes them go in loops. It’s tough to really describe what you want sometimes and in 3D space it’s even tougher.

I used to work with 3ds Max a bit - about 20 years ago - and I know that 3D modelling tools usually give you options to modify elements visually. OpenSCAD doesn’t. So I decided to build a tool myself.

2026.01.22 → [PYUI HELPER - FINALLY](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/pyui-helper-released/)

I’ve been shifting more towards Python development over the past few years - it’s becoming the industry standard for fast web development, especially with AI tooling. And there are so many cool frameworks now. But looking up those elements is a pain. Gradio docs, Streamlit docs, NiceGUI docs, back and forth, constantly. Some are in really poor shape, too. And they all build on top of other frameworks - Tailwind, Quasar, you name it - so you’re looking those up too.

2025.12.17 → [FLEXIBLE JULIA - MY NEW JETBRAINS PLUGIN](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-julia-plugin-released/)

A quick one, but I’ve just released Flexible Julia - a Julia language plugin for JetBrains IDEs. You can get it on the JetBrains Marketplace. Works with IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and other JetBrains products. So… yay :)

2025.10.26 → [AIVORY - WE'RE DOING COMPLIANCE NOW](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/aivory-relaunch/)

![AIVory compliance scanning in action](/images/aivory_website.png)

Writing this from San Francisco - back in the city with self-driving cars and people actually building stuff. Perfect timing, because I’ve got news.

Remember [AIVory](https://aivory.net)? The AI assistant we [launched in May](https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7384118463323295744/)? Yeah, that didn’t work. And I am not hiding it.

2025.10.26 → [AIVORY](https://www.paul-piper.de/projects/aivory/)

From AI Butler to Code Compliance Tool What started as a simple development pipeline somehow became the most complex project I’ve ever built. AIVory began life as an internal tool – just a way to streamline some repetitive coding tasks. But then we added a productivity feature here, a communication helper there, and before we knew it, we had something entirely different on our hands. The Accidental Evolution I remember the exact moment everything clicked with the first version.

2025.10.21 → [FLEXIBLE SOLIDITY - I ACCIDENTALLY BUILT A JETBRAINS PLUGIN](https://www.paul-piper.de/posts/flexible-solidity-launch/)

![Flexible Solidity plugin](/images/flexible-solidity.svg)

So I accidentally built a JetBrains plugin.

You know how it goes - you’re working on your main project (AIVory in my case), hit a wall, need to clear your head. Some people go for a walk. I… do projects like this.

2025.10.21 → [FLEXIBLE SOLIDITY](https://www.paul-piper.de/projects/flexible-solidity/)

When boredom leads to better tools I was deep into AIVory development, hit a wall, and needed a mental break. Some people go for walks. I apparently build JetBrains plugins. This wasn’t new territory for me – I’d already built Scipio ERP Integration, Flexible FreeMarker, Magnolia CMS Integration, consulted on Cody AI, and created the Rookout plugin. Plugin development had become my preferred form of procrastination. I’ve always been fascinated by blockchain technology from a purely technical perspective.
